Fresh out of the oven with extra sauce. Yes please.
"Fall-off-the-bone is the opposite of what wings should be because wings should always be crispy. Except these. These are really good. I could really get down with these."
-BF's Wing Philosophy which I proved wrong this week in making my favorite kind of chicken which is fall-off-the-bone. I hate to say I'm always right, but if the shoe fits...

Anyway, football season is here so I'm experimenting with clean eating comfort and tailgate foods that won't have me gaining 15 lbs by the time bowl games roll around. The obvious place to start is wings, so to appease both of us I did a fall-off-the-bone wing and a crispy wing (posting soon). In reality even orthodox believers of the Crispy Wing Only Lifestyle will not be able to resist these wings. I only made 8 wings because I thought I would be the only one eating them, but this recipe is easy to double/tripe/quadruple. Also if you don't have a crockpot, get one. They are so great. I got mine at Goodwill 2 years ago for $8, best food investment I've ever made.

Servings: 1 (see above)
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 4 hours

For the sauce:
  • 1 (15 ounce) can no sugar added tomato sauce($2.00)
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste ($.99)
  • 1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 4 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
Combine all of the ingredients and mix in a medium sized mixing bowl. This makes enough sauce for about 15-20 wings.

For the wings:
  • 8 wings (I bought a pack of 30 wing pieces for $20, used the rest for crispy wings)
  • 1.5 Cups homemade BBQ sauce
Throw it in the crockpot on medium for 4 hours. Take them out, brush them with some of the leftover BBQ sauce and place onto a foil-lined baking sheet. Set the oven to 'broil' and put the wings in for about 4-5 minutes. After they have gotten a little crispy on top flip them and put them back in for another 4-5 minutes. This adds a little crisp to the outside. When I pulled mine out of the oven I put more sauce on them because to me, the saucier the better.
