About

Hi I'm Lindsay!

I post about practical stuff we should know that makes life better. Not an influencer, just out here trying to make us more efficient, awake, good people.

I am real into efficiency, best practices, and data-based decisions which I maybe apply to the extreme in my personal life. My professional background in public education and local education policy really opened my eyes to social justice and I share my perspectives on that here too.

Based in D.C. with my husband, son, dog, and currently expecting baby #2 in October 2023 (2 under 2 here we come).

Also how great is my picture? It was captured by the amazing Jen Joseph, and if you are local to the DMV you need her to do a family photo session for you. I hate pictures of myself but I cried at every single photo from our family shoots together - she just gets it.

How do I know you?

This used to be a blog called Broke & Bougie back in the Wild Wild West days of blogging that kind of blew up when 3 million + downloaded a resource I published back in the day. Broke & Bougie was a blast (thank you all for the support over the years) but things are different because I'm different (yay growth!) and because Migos destroyed my killer SEO, but same values, same idea, just a little more grown up and a rebrand. You also may have been one of the thousands of participants that come here in 2020 for the 30 Day Education Challenge on race in America.

30 Day Education Challenge: Join thousands of others in learning about race in America including history (what we weren't taught in school), systemic racism, and action items you and your family can take together. This is a family friendly challenge.
THE Pregnancy Spreadsheet: I was appalled at how unorganized pregnancy is and how hard it was to find all the information I was looking for in one place. This spreadsheet attempts to organize it with a timeline outlining symptoms and doctor's appointments, a registry guide, product recommendations, and first week at home list.

  2. Love your blog! No way will I be actually clean eating 100%, and that's why I love that your recipes allow the occasional dose of a condiment. Just trying to live"healthy" and avoid hangovers, definitely enjoying your site!! Keep it up (please? Wouldn't know what to do without you telling me what and how to cook lol)

  4. Hey friend,

Miss your face. As you know, I've never been too bougie, but sometimes I eat that way, and I am def pretty broke these days. I love your blog.

Also, when I saw "bougie," my first thought was this song: :)

  5. I just came across your blog and WOW! FINALLY, recipes that are healthy, and what appear to be low in carb without having to purchase something. Thank you so much! I'm so excited to try these recipes and not go broke while doing it.

    Sincerely,
A poor college student trying to lose weight :)

  6. Just found your site and love it. Cracks me up! I, too, work in a rewarding field and therefore am broke. I'm attempting to "clean eat" basically because I realized my comfortable married lifestyle had me comfortably gaining lots of lbs. Keep up the good work!!!

  8. Thank you for your comments on my blog! Can I just say how ridiculous it is to live "comfortably" in the DC area? Let's just say that I have mapped out all of my favorite happy hour places solely because of their specials! So nice to meet you!

  9. Found your blog through the HumpDay blog linkup and boy am I glad I did. I'm a gym rat but still unsure of how to eat healthy (sounds ridonkulous), so your recipes are a God-send. :)

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Sarah! I definitely recommend scanning through the clean eating page, making lists before you go to the grocery store, planning meals for the week, and making sure you have lots of clean snacks (nuts, greek yogurt, fruit, veggies, cottage cheese) on hand!

  13. I really want to start "eating clean" so I went to Pinterest and found your wacky blog! I love you already. I live in Fort Lauderdale, FL, so I understand the expense that comes along with living in a "cool" city. I live my life "ballin on a budget", so the Broke and Bougie blog is just perfect! The $70 dress comments crack me up. Until Ms. $70 can purchase 5 pairs of shoes for $67 from Target (online shopping is great sometimes) then talk to me about a deal! I am the Clearance Queen :) I look forward to reading your blog...it is awesome.
p.s- "Pokey Sticks" were a Thursday night ritual for me and my roommates in Tallahassee. You just brought back so many memories!

  17. Hi Ashlyn,

I am not a dietitian or certified in any way, these are just my experiments with cleaning up my diet (:

  20. Great blog! Thank you for saying loud and proud how broke you are! Me too! I find that most people will hide it and are ashamed to say it but hey! We all work hard and sometimes this life just drains our money out, bills and bills and bills! I look forward to reading more. :^)
