I've seen a lot of gift guides floating around the internets, and while there seems to be a gift guide for every type of boyfriend/husband/dad out there I haven't found the Gift Guide for Your Grumpy, Sober, Pregnant Friend/Partner/Sibling/Person You Are Obligated to Get a Gift For". In preparation for black Friday and holiday chaos I'm sharing the products I actually use regularly that have made this pregnancy doable, as well as recs y'all shared. I received feedback after posting this on IG that this should actually just be a gift guide for people who appreciate comfort, it's not exclusive to pregnancy. So if you are preg or prioritize comfort do send this list along to people buying you gifts for black Friday shopping.

Listing the original prices but black Friday should give us some heavy discounts.

My Recs

Lululemon Align High Rise 28" Leggings ($98): These are pricey but they are MAGICAL which makes them a great gift. I'm in my regular pre-pregnancy Lululemon size (8) at 33 weeks pregnant, and everyone has said these are also great post-partum. A lot of y'all also recommended the Align Joggers

Origins Leg Lifts Lotion ($30): A friend gave me this lotion and I wish I had discovered it earlier. I've put my legs through some crazy sh*t (like running a marathon) but they have never ached/been as tired as they are in pregnancy.

Bombas Socks ($16+): I cannot express enough how sweaty pregnancy is and how uncomfortable my feet are. Nice socks that feel like sweaters hugging your feet help.

I also recommend the grippy socks as hormones loosen pregnant people's joints which makes us clumsier. Lawd knows I was already falling all over myself.

Supportive Fuzzy Slippers ($12-$24): On the topic of aching feet, I found these on a list of podiatrist recommended slippers and then read in the reviews that TIBAL recommended these at some point so we KNOW these are good. **Make sure to get the hard bottoms NOT the fuzzy bottom sandals - they are different!

Mermaid Noire Candle ($16): During first trimester every smell, including the smell of my home, made me feel sick to my stomach - EXCEPT this candle. I burned it 24/7. Now that I'm out of the throes of first tri I'm burning the Brown Sugar Milk Tea candle.

Meundies Hooded Robe ($72): Y'all know how I am about robes. Harrison got me this for Christmas a few years ago and it has carried me through 3rd trimester. It has a hood and pockets which I thought are mandatory features I have never used but I hear from the moms will come in extremely handy during nighttime feedings.

Baggage Claim Eye Masks ($25): These under eye gels feel glorious after a night of insomnia. Sidenote: I thought I was adjusting well to the insomnia but recently saw a picture of myself and realized I am in fact not coping as well as I thought. But these eye gels feel good and that counts for something.

Cooling Pajamas ($45+): NIGHT SWEATS ARE VERY VERY REAL and I swear by these pajamas - sweat wicking, cooling, comfortable. Note: I got a few DMs about pajamas and I feel the need to clarify that these are NOT sexy pajamas - they are purely functional.

Kindle Paperwhite ($89) : The adjustable backlight means you can read poolside while everyone else is taking shots, or in bed when you are up with insomnia and don't want to turn on a light and wake up your partner from their precious, amazing, easy to come by sleep.

Savage Fenty Jumpsuit ($90): Pockets, hood, extremely soft and warm. This was a Christmas gift last year and the medium is carrying me through the end of third trimester. The zipper front means it should work for breastfeeding, pumping, and anything else one needs to whip out a boob for. You can sign up for a membership, purchase the items, and then cancel the membership to get discounts.

Love Scrub Mesh Body Exfoliator ($18): I am one of the white people who washes every part of my body regularly. This is like a loofah except it stretches out to be FEET long so you can wrap it around yourself to scrub and exfoliate hard to reach spots and spots get harder to reach and bending over becomes impossible.

Nike Free Run 5.0 Shoes ($100): Harrison got these for me after I complained about my feet hurting. Super supportive, foamy soft, and they slip on which is mandatory as bending over to tie shoes is no longer an option. I had to go a size up in these.

Slides ($28): I've always been opposed to adults wearing slides because they feel like I'm going to high school soccer practice but these slip on and off so easily and are v. supportive. Third trimester has turned me into a person who leaves the house in socks and slides. They're that good.

Recs from y'all:

Shipt membership ($99)

Frida Mom Recovery Kit ($39)

Frida Mom Hospital Bag Essentials ($99)

Bidet ($50) *IYKYK*

Compression Socks ($20)

Shopping Black owned is more important now than ever. On top of the fact that Black entrepreneurs face significantly more barriers in starting and maintaining a business than their white peers, Black owned businesses have been disproportionately impacted by COVID - I broke it all down visually here and at the bottom of this post. One small act you can do today in the fight against systemic racism is to shop Black-owned businesses for your holiday gifts this year. Why Shop Black-Owned

Black-Owned Shopping Gift Guide

One of the topics dominating my group texts right now is the relationship strain, or complete loss of relationships, due to the upcoming election. I conducted a poll on Instagram to get some numbers around this and here is what yall said:
  • 51% have cut off relationships because of disagreements around the election
  • 81% have strained relationships because of the election
  • 67% said the strain is more with family than friends
I asked for tips and resources on handling these conversations and people submitted a lot of really thoughtful advice which you can see on my Instagram highlights here. While there is a lot we can learn from each other on this topic, I also did some research on what the stats says works when it comes to swaying voters on the biggest presidential election of our time. Here are the takeaways:

Voters: The Stats

  • 11% of registered voters are undecided on who they will vote for.
    • 53% of these voters plan to do their own research to make a final decision
    • 20% plan to decide based on the debates.

The Issues

  • Americans largely support Trump's "plan" for economic recovery, but support Biden on most other issues (see below):

  • 72% of voters polled fear the rise of racism
  • 66% of voters fear rioters and looting - this is higher than percentage of voters who fear Coronavirus.
Important note about the stats above: those polled said they do not get their news from Fox News (my first assumption). These fears come from other news sources - mostly found on social media.

Messaging

  • Most undecided voters could recall recent negative stories about Trump but could not recall any positive stories about Biden or his policies.
  • Negative information about Trump has limited impact in swaying voters.
  • The key to swaying voters is to educate them about Joe Biden's plans and policies.
  • Messaging on specific topics has a bigger impact in swaying voters:
    • #1 (tie): the economy
    • #1 (tie): healthcare
    • #3: race issues
    • #4: climate change
    • #5: education

Actions We Need to Take

The research and polling says the highest impact activities we can do are those that share information about Biden's plans and policies. These actions are going to matter all the way up to the minute the polls close on Election Day.
  1. Share information about Biden's plans on social media (I will commit to synthesizing Biden's plans in a shareable format on Instagram and here on the blog. If you're not already receiving these posts as emails, sign up so you can easily forward to your networks and repost on social).
  2. Educate yourself on Biden's plans and share what you learn with your network. Here is where you can research on your own.
  3. Sign up to phone or text bank for Biden here (I've done this for months, it's very very easy and not scary at all).

Action Steps to Sway the 2020 Presidential Election

A few weeks ago I put out a call on IG for clean/non-toxic serums as I ran out of my beloved Beautycounter Resurfacing Peel and Herbivore Botanicals's Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Serum at the same time. I've tried a lot of serums that I love but love to try new ones.

The ones I've loved:

Beautycounter Overnight Resurfacing Peel
Cost: $63
Good for: brightness, smoothing.
This is all the rage in the BC community and I am here to say it is worth the hype! It feels great, smells good, and I love how my skin feels in the morning. Yes, Beautycounter is an MLM but yes you can also order directly from their website too.

Herbivore Botanicals's Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Serum
Cost; $54
Good for: anti-aging, acne
Love this as a retinol-alternative. I have sensitive skin (read: somehow dry AND oily, somehow battling wrinkles AND teenage acne) and most derms have recommended retinol. I found this in my search for alternatives and have liked it a lot.

Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos Night Serum
Cost; $90
Good for: brightening, smoothing, fine lines.
This is at the higher end of the price spectrum and I get it. It feels great, my skin looked great when I used it.

These were the top most recommended in my Instagram poll for your favorite serums:
Sunday Riley Luna
Cost; $105
Good for: plumping, wrinkles

Is Clinical Active
Cost; $117
Good for: aging, brightness, acne

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic
Cost; $166
Good for: brightening, firming, lightening

Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos (same as above - I'm telling you everyone is onto this one)

Osmosis Rescue Serum
Cost; $54
Good for: smoothing, evening, acne

Kiehl's Vitamin C Serum
Cost; $68
Good for: firming, aging

At the beginning of 2020 (I think? tbh time right now is pre-covid and during-covid so all I know is this happened pre-covid) I asked for everyone's favorite books they read in 2019, and am going to try to get through as many as possible in 2020. A hack here is that the 2019 best sellers are much easier to get at the library (aka free) in 2020, plus I've got some time in quarantine to do some reading.

*note: if you can, order from local bookstores - a lot are delivering books via Postmates and other apps! Let's keep our neighbors open! I get most of my e-books and audiobooks from the public library.

My Favorites:

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (now a show on Hulu so I can play my favorite game where I point out everything the book did better)

Educated by Tara Westover: Tara's incredible memoir of growing up in an impoverished survivalist family and self-educating herself to get into BYU and eventually Harvard and Cambridge.

Winter in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand: A woman's husband dies in a tragic accident, and her self-investigation uncovers a whole double life he's been leading. Best guilty pleasure.

House of Gold by Natasha Solomons: I love historical fiction, and this story based on the Schwarzchild family through the early 20th century is fantastic.

In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson: Based on the true stories of an American ambassador's family living in Berlin through Hitler's reign.

Crowdsourced via Instagram:

Fiction
*indicates historical fiction which, in this poll, I found out I'm not the only nerd who loves a good historical fiction read.

2020 Book List

Friday, April 17, 2020

About a year ago I decided to hop on the bandwagon and transition to non-toxic products. When I mentioned this to my doctor she said "oh good, that will reduce your risk for some cancers and and the potential for auto-immune flair ups" and I was like, excuse me???? I've been asking you for years for advice and you tell me to eat well and exercise?! But ANYWAY. The definition of 'non-toxic' and 'natural' is debatable and unregulated so it's crucial to do research - which, as someone who doesn't have hobbies, I would say reading/research/useless deep dives are the closest thing to a hobby that I have. So here we are blogging about it.

One of the first products I switched was deodorant because, isn't everyone doing it right now? I couldn't find any definitive research saying the ingredients in regular deodorant will kill you, but I did check my deodorants on EWG (see Using EWG Ratings at the bottom of this post) and saw my Secret Clinical Strength deo was a 5 out of 10. Yikes. So here's my experience (note: all our body's are different and will react differently to deodorants, this is my experience as a sweaty person):

My reviews:

Schmidt's
EWG Rating: 2. Cost: $9

Pros:
  • Can get it anywhere (Target, Wal-Mart, Amazon)
  • Price
Cons
  • Gave me a v. uncomfy rash (which taught me I need to search for baking soda free deos)
  • Turned the pits of my white shirts yellow /:
  • Gritty texture

EWG Rating: 1. Cost: $12

Pros:
  • No rash!
  • Love the scents

Con: THE only con that matters is that this deodorant was not effective enough for my level of sweat.

Primally Pure Charcoal (the one all the influencers were pushing back in Jan - I gave into the marketing!)
EWG Rating: 2. Cost: $16

Pros:
  • Pretty effective
  • No rash

Cons:
  • Can only get it via the Primally Pure website
  • The scent was not for me
  • Once you add shipping it's $20+

Native (in my current rotation)
EWG Rating: 1. Cost: $11

Pros:
  • LOVE the scents (a few of yall on IG said the scent impacted the level of effectiveness for you)
  • Can get it anywhere (well Target and where else matters?)
  • Nice texture

Cons:
  • Not ALWAYS the most effective

Kopari (in my current rotation)
EWG Rating: 4. Cost: $11

Pros:

  • Love the scent
  • Effective
  • Can buy at Sephora so easy to add on to get free shipping
  • Love the texture

Cons:
  • A lot of people in my IG poll reported that it foams when they exercise - I haven't experienced this (or, I haven't noticed it).

Additional crowd-sourced recommendations:

Tips for making the switch (mine and crowdsourced via Instagram)
  • The transition can be...smelly (which is why quarantine is a great time to do it). This is because our bodies are essentially detoxing everything the aluminum in other deodorants has been blocking. This lasts a few weeks and then things get back to normal.
  • I alternate. This may be in my head, but I swear my body gets immune and I have to switch it up every few months.
  • Natural deodorant is different - I reapply a few times a day.
  • Especially during the transition plan for a clean bra every day (wooosh they hold in smells don't they!)

Using EWG Ratings: Environmental Working Group rates products based on the safety of the chemicals in the product. EWG Verified means there is no trace of any possible cancer-causing/dangerous/bad for you chemicals. 1 is the next safest, 10 is the least safe.

clean corner: transitioning to natural deodorant 101 (there's never been a better time)

Looks like a lot of us are working from home for quite awhile (shoutout to our frontline workers like medical professionals, public transit employees, grocery store employees, and other essential employees who are out there risking lives while I have the privilege to work from the safety of my home). Prior to COVID I worked from home about once per week and spent a huge amount of time studying at home during grad school. I received some crucial tips from a group of Occupational Therapists I worked with, plus some tips from my therapist when I felt so overwhelmed at home because I couldn't separate work and school from my me-time. Here are the top tips that are keeping me somewhat sane right now:

The Office Setup
  • The space: I set up a corner of our guest room to be my office. This (usually) prevents Harrison from wandering into the background of my video calls and helps me with boundaries- when I'm in that room I'm working, when I'm not in the room I'm not working. If you don't have a separate room even picking a corner or space of the home is helpful here.
  • Natural light: This is a game-changer for my mood because we NEED natural light, plus it makes you look better on video calls. I set up my desk right in front of the window (it requires a bit of squeezing and rearranging of the guest bed that is not feng-shui but is good for my mood).
  • Desk chair: Desk chairs are $$$$ and I'm just not committed enough to this to invest in a good office chair so I DIYed it. I have an old kitchen chair with a padded seat and a $26 lumbar support pillow. The OTs told me my knees need to be at a 90 degree angle when I'm working, so I have an Amazon box for my feet to sit on that gets my knees to the right angle (this helped immensely with hip pain I had a few years ago).
  • LIGHTS: I've discussed this before but when yall join a video call and have one lamp on in the room, you look like an anonymous witness on Dateline trying to protect your identity. You too can have a Love is Blind production-level set in your home office with just a few extra lamps and by keeping your main lights on. I found my lamps around the house and love my little LED desk lamp that, yes, shines right on my face in video calls for that professional set look. Harrison calls my home office "the interrogation room" because of how bright I keep it.
  • Keyboard placement: The OTs told me my elbows need to be at a 90 degree angle while typing which took some mix and match with my chair and desk setup. Once I got this right, my shoulder pain disappeared within a week. They also recommended a split keyboard to protect my wrist, but these are pricey!
  • Computer setup: While sitting up straight, our eyeballs should be looking straight into the center of the computer screen. This required me to do some minor engineering by putting my laptop stand on top of a game box. Not cute but good for the neck and ensures you don't sit hunched over all day.
  • Plants: I have a black thumb, I kill plants just by looking at them but have read a lot about how good it is for us to have plants around so I have a succulent on the desk that is extremely hard to kill. We'll see if it makes it through my isolation. And don't you worry, Amazon is delivering succulents.

Crowdsourced Suggestions
Crowdsourced via Instagram poll
  • If working from home with a partner, make up a fake coworker to blame (Donna didn't do this dishes again!)
  • Scheduled breaks
  • Stand up at least once an hour
  • Stick to office hours schedule so you don't end up working all day/night
  • Burn a delicious smelling candle to keep you feeling zen and happy
  • Remember to eat! If you get sucked into work it's hard to step away and then we get hangry
  • Have familiar coworkers check in with audio calls so you can walk around while you talk
  • Keep your same morning routine but use commute time to dance party/read/meditate

Ok. That's a lot but hopefully helps our bodies stay right during this time at home. What else should be included in the home office?

PS: Thanks for sticking this out as we go through a rebrand/redesign. Over the next week+ this space will get easier to navigate and better to look at on mobile.

How to Work From Home: Setting Up a Home Office
