My favorite gifts to give (and receive of course) are the ones that also give back. We all know Toms and their "Buy One Give One" program, but here are some of my other favorite affordable stores that give back with each [trendy] purchase made- also, guys listen up, these make great Valentine's gifts! Especially if your someone-special is passionate about a certain cause. Really what better way is there to show you pay attention and care?

  1. The Animal Rescue Site: Each ITEM bought from The Animal Rescue Site funds at least 14 bowls of food for shelter animals in need. My sweet Andi came from Angel Dogs Rescue where the shelter workers constantly fund dog food from their own pockets due to lack of funding- not ok! This site has cool canvas shoes as well as mugs for dog and cat lovers, plus other sweet gifts (my mom gave me this doggie oven glove last year)- and OMG THESE SLIPPERS!!! This site also has links to gifts that give back to autism, literacy, breast cancer, hunger, veterans, diabetes and the rainforest.
  2. Ekata Designs: There are currently 10 million refugees in the world, the majority of which are women and children. These women and children face all kinds of challenges such as overcoming trauma from the past, learning a new language and culture, finding a job and becoming self-sufficient- a difficult process. Ekata Designs is an organization run by my little brother's friend in Memphis, TN who hires Nepalese refugee women and trains them to make jewelry which they sell in their Etsy Shop. The jewelry is beautiful (my brother gave me this necklace for Christmas) and really reasonably priced. I also love these earrings and this bracelet
  3. Soapbox Soaps: Did you know 3,000 children's lives could be saved every DAY with something as simple as clean water and soap?? With ever soap purchase Soapbox Soaps (headquartered right here in DC!) provides soap, vitamins and clean water to children right here in the US and internationally. Their liquid soaps make great host gifts, and these all-natural soaps and bodywashes are less expensive than typical name-brand and drug store soaps. My favorite is the Mandarin Bodywash.
  4. Twice as Warm (also located here in DC) donates a clothing item to families in need for every item purchased. Unlike similar organizations, Twice as Warm donates the same high quality products to families as you are buying. I love their All American Ear Warmer (also a great gift for your favorite American patriot), DC Polar Bear T, and Classic Fleece Scarf.

What am I missing? Leave ideas in the comments if I've missed some good ones, I like lots of ideas!

Woosh yall I'm stiiiilll strugglin to get back into a routine! While this weather has me in a real funk, exercising is the only thing keeping my mood up and my energy level going. I did a Fitness Blender HIIT followed by some Blogilates arms...oof.

Question: what does everyone else do to keep energy up and moods good when we haven't seen the sun in days (weeks?) and the high temps are a steady 25 degrees or lower?

Wednesday Workout: HIIT & Arms

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

I've been seeing this one all over Pinterest and have been pretty skeptical considering it is sometimes called "porridge". I mean, porridge? I think in 2nd grade when we went to school for a day in an 1800's one room school house we had to eat something called "porridge" for lunch after we took turns "churning butter" because that's what kids in 1800s one-room school houses had to eat. But anyway, this is my new go-to breakfast for sure- make it at night in a tupperware, pop a lid on it, put it in the fridge and grab it on the way to work. It kind of tastes like a yogurt parfait- but it's clean and packed with protein and dietary fiber (what up full stomach all morning!).

Here it is:

Servings: 1
Prep Time: 5 mins (+5ish hours of chill time in the fridge overnight)
Cook Time: 0

Ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup fat-free Greek Yogurt*
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened Almond Milk*
  • 1/3 cup old-fashioned oats (can also use steel cut oats)
  • Any toppings you want to mix in! (have fun and switch it up! some ideas: strawberries, honey, blueberries, apples & cinnamon, vanilla, chopped walnuts, maple syrup...you can really do anything with this)
*If you want your's thicker, add more Greek Yogurt and less Almond Milk. For less thick, less Greek Yogurt and more Almond Milk
Combine all the ingredients in a tupperware, mix well, and let it chill overnight in the fridge.

all mixed up!

Pop a lid on it and pop it in the fridge over night- grab and go in the morning

These nutrition facts do not include any toppings

Greek Yogurt + Almond Milk + Oats + Fruit = Clean Breakfast on the Go!

A few months ago I published a post on Clean Eating Tailgate foods. Super Bowl is one of the best times to convert people to clean eating- show up with delicious snacks and people are like "Ohh this is so good" and then I'm like "yeah yall and it's clean!" and they're like "wait are you serious?" and then I'm laughing to myself. So for a little super bowl snacking inspiration, here are all my clean snacks that are totally appropriate for Super Bowl Sunday.

And in honor of Bruno Mars' halftime show, my favorite Bruno song (Gorrilas) WITH R.KELLEY. Really who doesn't love little tiny Bruno when he hits those high notes, and R. Kelley..well he's a great singer he just needs to stay off twitter, or to fire his publicist. Actually on second thought, keep it up R. I laughed so hard at the hashtags that came out of that.

Healthy Super Bowl Snacks (all clean!)

I'm gonna admit, I have really sucked at getting back into my routine since I've been back. Cooking pretty much hasn't happened and I definitely JUST unpacked yesterday. I think I'm in denial about the whole leaving-paradise-to-return-to-polar-vortex thing. But anyway the BF (oopsies I mean fiance/biance) cooked this up on Thursday and it actually turned out delishhh, despite the fact that when we left Jamaica we both swore we never wanted chicken again (specifically jerk chicken).

Servings: 2
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Clean Barbecue Sauce ($1.00)
  • 1.2 lb chicken thighs, thawed ($3.50)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 large onion, diced ($.25)
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced ($.40)
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced ($1.00)
  • 4 slices turkey bacon, cooked (optional- not necessarily clean but when someone else is cooking for me I'm not gonna say no..)
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Combine the salt, pepper, barbecue sauce, and chicken thighs in a ziplock bag and let marinate for at least an hour (I usually let it marinate all day while I'm at work but I wasn't in charge this time).

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. After it has had time to marinate, dump all the ziploc bag contents into a non-stick baking pan (I just got my new non-stick rust proof baking dish from Zulily for $8!!). Evenly sprinkle the garlic powder over the chicken. Add the garlic, bell pepper, onion, mushrooms and bacon evenly over the chicken.

Cook in the oven for 30 minutes and enjoy this juicy supper! We ate our's with a fresh arugula salad.

one of the rainless days. so beautiful.

Soooo I pretty much had the best week ever. Jamaica was beeauuttiffull (despite record-breaking rainfall), our friends' wedding was a blast (despite being outdoors during record breaking rainfall), spending a week with friends in paradise is straight up good for the soul (despite record breaking rainfall), annndddd I got engaged! So I guess I'll start posting about planning a Broke but Bougie wedding soon? Anyway I don't like the sound of the word "fiance" but I do love the sound of "biance" (just say it out loud). And one note about the engagement: I think my biance may have a career as a jewelry designer- check out the sapphire ring at the bottom!

Anyway, in honor of an incredibly broke & bougie vacation, I want to spread the lessons I learned on planning a paradise vacation on a super tight budget.

FlightsKayak Alerts are your best friend! Tell them where you're going and when, and they e-mail you a daily roundup of the best airline prices of the day (or week, or you can get push notifications on the phone). It's essentially extreme airline bargain shopping, but they do the work for you.
OH and don't forget to sign up for those frequent flier miles- they rack up fast (especially during wedding season) and you could end up with a free flight by the end of the year!

Lodging: The destination wedding was clutch when it came to lodging. We stayed at a resort that is usually $600/night for $175/night. I got a lot of recommendations for Riu as a more affordable all-inclusive option, and everyone and their mothers says Secrets and Sandals are the most amazing experiences for 24 hour room service, top shelf drinks, and 100% all inclusiveness.

Food and Booze: My brother used to sell timeshares in Cabo and I'm going to let you in on a little secret he once told me: you are almost never saving money doing all-inclusive. There are definitely times that all-inclusives are worth it and you are saving money, but we skipped that this time around, got a cab to the grocery store, loaded up on lunch meat, bagels (I know I fell off the clean wagon), bread, snack bars, beer and liquor. For $150 we had lunch, breakfast, snacks and a few suppers covered. We could also bop down the street to the famous Scotchies for jerk chicken, and eat at the hotel bar for $10. Again, the wedding was clutch as we had 3 meals paid for while we were there. All week we walked around with our own mixed drinks and beers at the beach and it was not a problem (and we weren't paying $10/drink either!)

Entertainment: This is where having a large group was crucial, and also traveling with a promoter didn't hurt either. We didn't need to go out that much as it was so fun to stay in and hang out with everyone and drink. We went out two nights to touristy dance clubs (Margaritaville and Pier 1) in shuttle buses coordinated by one of the guys in our group. We had a great time and drinks didn't cost that much at the clubs compared to DC. The bride also organized a catamaran tour for us one of the days which was great with such a big group. Couldn't recommend doing Jamaica with a group more for the entertainment factor.

Take advantage of deals: Some definitely seem too good to be true but Groupon Getaways and LivingSocial Escapes offer tons of awesome vacation deals. One of my friends just got back from a 7 day trip to Ireland where the $1200 Groupon she bought paid for round-trip airfare, activities, rental car, and 6 nights stay in the Ritz. And my mom did Jamaica last year on a Groupon Getaway. Just make sure to read on-line reviews of the companies offering the deals. Expedia and Priceline also offer last-minute deals for great prices. For cruises subscribe to cruiseline newsletters- Carnival sends weekly discount especially during off-season. Sidenote: we went on a ridiculously cheap carnival cruise last year because we booked two days after the infamous poop cruise incident. Timing is everything, people!

Annnnd for a look into our incredible vacay:
gotta do the catamaran! rain or shine this is such a fun way to spend the day in Jamaica

I know. How beautiful is this? Almost want to have my own destination wedding!

I KNOW RIGHT?

Vacation on a Budget (Jamaica Recap)

Thursday, January 23, 2014

My view as I'm writing..

Greetings from Jamaica! It's so wonderful and beautiful and sunny here, but I won't go on with details to make everyone jealous.

Just because it's vacation doesn't mean healthy living goes on a hiatus. Ok that's kind of a lie, I'm definitely kicking up my eating and drinking a notch, but I AM trying really hard to exercise at least 3 times on this vacation. I am the queen of excuses for not exercising at hotels (how often they sanitize the machines in the workout room? Do you know how many germs and sicknesses are spread in gyms that aren't kept clean? What is gym protocol at a hotel anyway? Running on the beach in a foreign country- what if I get picked up and end up in a Liam-Neison-Taken situation?) SO I made an interval training workout that can be done with minimal space and no equipment, essentially hotel room bootcamp.  Wifi here is spotty so I made printable you can download here.

Sidenote: There are lots of free apps that are interval timers out there. That makes it SO much easier than constantly checking the stopwatch on the iphone!

Intermediate/advanced: perform each exercise for 45 seconds with 15 seconds rest.
Beginner: Perform each exercise for 30 seconds with 30 second rest

Wednesday Workout: Hotel Room Workout

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

In about 5 minutes I'm jumping into a Super Shuttle to take off for JAMAICA for my friends' wedding!! I. Am. So. EXCITED!! Bye bye cold cloudy weather, bye bye work, and hallloooo warm sunshine ocean water beach days with friends! Also, UGA finally got rid of the miz Defensive Coordinator so really I am in heaven right now dreaming of Jamaica and the winning football season the Bulldogs are going to have next year.

But anywayyyy, I made enough of this filling as lunch for the week last week and loooveddd it. Love love loved it. The BF hates black beans so I didn't even have to share!

Servings: 5
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins

Ingredients:
  • 1 can black beans ($.90)
  • 2 medium zucchini, chopped ($1.00)
  • 3/4 cup uncooked quinoa ($2.00)
  • 1 plantain, chopped into chunks ($.80)
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced ($.90)
  • 1 cup fresh spinach ($1.00)
  • 1 large tomato, diced ($1.00)
  • 1/2 onion, diced ($.90)
  • 2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 5 Ezekiel tortillas ($4.50)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil/olive oil/vegetable oil/whatever you use to saute veggies
Cook the quinoa. While the quinoa is cooking, combine the onion and bell pepper in a large frying pan and saute over medium heat for about 2 minutes. After 2 minutes add the garlic and let cook about 3 minutes. After the 3 minutes add the zucchini, plantains, black beans, cumin, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper. Cook the ingredients for about 3 more minutes (stirring constantly), adding the spinach for the last minute.

Combine the cooked quinoa, the veggie-bean concoction and the cilantro in a large bowl and mix well. Scoop 4-5 spoonfuls onto your tortilla and enjoy for lunch each day! I switch it up and add Greek Yogurt some days and avocado other days.

P.S. Check out the nutrition info for this compared with a Chipotle Vegetarian Burrito:

Can we just talk about hard boiled eggs? They are so simple yet so much can go wrong- the shells can stick to the eggs, the eggs can be too soft, the eggs can be overcooked... the list goes on. But last weekend was jam-packed with friends in town, a concert, and a post-church bottomless brunch that caused me to be completely worthless on Sunday night, meaning grocery shopping did not happen, meaning the only food in the fridge was half a tub of Greek Yogurt and 8 eggs. So I boiled some eggs for my breakfast for the week. Delicious, nutritious, and oh so filling.

Here's how I did it, including my secret ingredient that ensures those shells don't stick to the eggs (ugh really what is worse than spending approximately 30 minutes peeling an egg only to end up with half of the hard-boiled egg surviving the peeling disaster?) and that the eggs are perfectly boiled (what else can you ask for?). Plus this is so easy, it takes minimal effort (obviously since I did this after a bottomless brunch).

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins

Ingredients:
  • Eggs (however many you want)
  • Water
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
Put the eggs in one layer in a pot. Add enough water that the eggs are covered with one inch-ish of water. Now add 1 teaspoon of baking soda (this is the secret ingredient that makes sure your shell doesn't stick to the egg! I read about 10000 theories on why this is and decided, hey it works I don't need to know why).

Place the pot on the stove with the heat on high. Bring to a rolling boil (example of rolling boil below- it's like warzone boiling). Let the rolling boil go for one minute (set a timer). Once the minute is up, remove the pot from the heat, cover the pot, and let the pot with hot water and eggs set for 10 minutes (set your timer again!).

After the ten minutes, transfer the eggs into a bowl. Fill the bowl with ice water and let the eggs set in the ice water for 5 minutes.

And that's it! You have perfectly easy to peel hard boiled eggs!

What other little secrets like baking powder are out there??

Here is an example of "rolling boil"

Confession: I love fake cheese, especially fake cheese on top of fake chili on top of greasy fries- with lots and lots of fake cheese. Like, the faker the cheese the better. I hate baseball but you can find me at a Nat's game any day shoving through the crowd at the concession stand for some of that disgusting liquid nacho cheese. OMG and Velveeta! So needless to say chili cheese fries are a major point of weakness for me.

So I had lots of Turkey Chili leftover from the polar vortex weekend and came up with this. While there is no fake liquid cheese involved it truly hit the spot, and major bonus: not waking up in the middle of the night with heartburn, cramps, and horrible things going on inside my stomach. And you know what? It was really filling because of all the protein and fiber.

And just look how the nutrition facts stack up against each other:

Sonic Chili Cheese Fries
Broke and Bougie Chili Cheese Fries
Servings: 1
Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins

Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups leftover Crockpot Turkey Chili
  • 1/2 large sweet potato ($.50)
  • 1 slice avocado ($.25)
  • 1/8 cup mozzarella cheese ($.50)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1-2 scoops reduced fat Greek Yogurt
  • Juice of half lime ($.30)
Make the sweet potato fries- this time I used the mandolin to make large slices of the sweet potatoes and cut those into fries. Took a lot less muscle.

Once the fries are cooked pile them together on the baking sheet, scoop the chili on top of the fries, top with cheese, and return to the oven (at 450 degrees) for ten minutes.

Top with lime juice, garlic powder, Greek Yogurt and avocado. Enjoy!!
Sliced these with a mandolin

And cut them into these!

Tis the season..
...to be completely anti-social and sit around and watch Netflix marathons all day and night!

Which is all I did as the subzero vortex came through DC. Up until this year I've always just had a Netflix subscription and no cable, but Sports Center and True Blood are non-negotiables for the BF so we pay an additional $120/month (which is an extra $1,500/year, do you have any idea how far I could stretch $1,500??) so he can have his two TV shows that he cannot live without. I still pretty much only watch Netflix just to prove a point- except of course the occasional Teen Mom marathons. ANYWAY Here are my favorite Netflix Movies and Netflix documentaries, as well as marathonable Netflix series:

  1. A Doula Story (documentary): Incredible story of a Doula (kind of like a midwife) who commits her life to supporting and fighting for pregnant teens in Chicago.
  2. The Woman Who Wasn't There (documentary): The INSANE story of a woman who posed as a 9/11 survivor, manipulated other victims, did all kinds of crazy ish...you have to see it to believe it.
  3. The Lifeguard (movie): Story of an almost-30-year-old going through a quarter-life crisis. Really who isn't going through that right now? Something about watching the amazing Kristen Bell go through it so un-glamorously makes it all feel ok.
  4. Being Elmo (documentary): The touching story of the soft-spoken puppeteer's journey to become Elmo. Bonus: tons of behind-the-scenes Sesame Street stuff.
  5. Cropsey (documentary): This doc digs into the urban legend of Cropsey, an escaped mental patient who haunts Staten Island. Don't watch this alone, it's REAL creepy.
  6. The L Word (TV Show): Sex & The City with lesbians.
  7. Sons of Perdition (documentary): I know the whole escape-from-the-sisterwives thing is a little overdone thanks to TLC, but you can't help but get attached to the teens this doc follows as they struggle to adapt to life outside the LDS- and try to save their families.
  8. Blackfish (documentary): Look I've had a thing for orcas since my brother and I saved up our allowances for a Free Willy Club exclusive membership (anyone else wear that orca cord necklace religiously?), and this is insane. Interesting fact: Sea World trainers have no background in training or marine biology or anything like that. Annd I'm never going back to Sea World again.
  9. Sherry Baby (movie): I search "Maggie Gyllenhal" and this is the first one to come up. I was not disappointed. Just released from prison, Sherry struggles to be a good mom and stay clean. It's Maggie Gyllenhall.
  10. House of Cards (TV Show): If you haven't seen this, you're late. If nothing else watch it so you can know what everyone is talking about on February 14th when season 2 comes out, and so you can have something to look forward to on dreaded Valentine's Day.
  11. What Maisie Knew (movie): Sweet story of a 6 year old girl caught between her selfish parents' divorce. It sounds sad but I promise, the end is worth it. Oh and Eric from True Blood is in it, and Julianne Moore, so..
  12. Prodigal Sons (documentary): A transgender woman returns home to rural Montana for her class reunion, a class in which she was Paul the high school all-star quarterback. During this time she attempts to re-connect with her estranged brother. So interesting.
Since it's a new year and I've heard from a lot of people about fitness resolutions, I've scouted out the best budget-friendly workout gear. Is it just me or is it so much easier to force ourselves to exercise when you have cute clothes to do it in? Just saying.

I don't usually do this but I have something I need to get off my chest.

So Ke$ha entered rehab for an eating disorder after apparently being fat-shamed by her producer, Dr. Luke, for years. Multiple news outlets report him calling her a "fucking fat refrigerator"--I apologize for the language, but the F word really exposes the hostility of his statements and the intensity of the fat-shaming that is apparently acceptable today.

It really gets to me how much women's weight matters, and how engrained it is in us. I was so ashamed this weekend when I went to see one of my favorite bands play in DC and found myself hyper-focused on how big the (female) lead singer's thighs looked in her tiny shorts. A part of me was jealous- I wish I had that kind of confidence- but a bigger part of me was pissed at myself. Why were her thighs getting more of my attention than her incredible voice? Why wasn't I focused at all on what the guys in the band were wearing? It makes me wonder if One Direction or Robin Thicke or other male pop stars are subject to the kind of demands and shaming that Ke$ha and plenty of other female stars (and regular people like us) are.

I love Ke$ha's statement about entering rehab: "I'm a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself but I've found it hard to practice. I'll be unavailable for the next 30 days, seeking treatment for my eating disorder ... to learn to love myself again. Exactly as I am." Can we all go to rehab (especially the media and Dr. Luke) to learn how to love ourselves exactly as we are? If I have daughters I hope when they are my age looking at how media portrays women's bodies in 2013, they laugh at how old-fashioned it is to fat-shame and make women think they have to be a certain (practically unattainable) size.

So here's to 2014 and loving ourselves exactly as we are, eating for health and NOT a fantasy dress size or a number on the scale, and exercising to get stronger and to push ourselves. This year Strong and Healthy are my new Beautiful.

And on that note (and now that I have that off my chest), here's the killer workout I did today. I definitely thought the Blogilates video was just an ab workout and was (un)pleasantly surprised to learn there is in fact also MORE cardio. But hey, it's 2014 and we're getting strong! Motivational workout mix is at the bottom of the page, you can play from this page or click the icon to get to the website and play it on your phone and hook it up to a speaker so it's nice and loud. This mix is made by my good friend DJ Dimmy, who also happens to be a fitness instructor at WSC - ladies, he's single!

Also I did some research on D180 (the HIIT video trainer), and found out that the instructor is actually a high school teacher! Gyahhhhh can you imagine having this man as your high school math teacher?!

And can we just talk about how happy these people look in front of his gym? They clearly did not just complete a D180 HIIT routine because they would not be able to lift their arms that high in the air. Just saying. Sorry that my hair will not get shampooed for a few days.
